Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) Therapy in the Treatment For Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) and Related Anxiety Disorders in Plymouth, MI
What is ERP?
Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) is a specialized, evidence-based form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), and is considered the gold-standard treatment for Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) and related anxiety conditions. At its core, ERP works by gradually and safely helping clients face thoughts, images, situations, or triggers that cause distress (the "exposure") while building your ability to resist the urge to perform compulsions, rituals, or avoidance behaviors that typically follow (the "response prevention"). Over time, this process helps retrain the brain's response to anxiety, reducing the power that obsessive thoughts and compulsive behaviors hold over your daily life.
What Will Treatment Look Like?
ERP is not about facing your fears all at once (a.k.a. “flooding”) or being pushed beyond what feels manageable. Treatment is collaborative and paced according to your comfort and readiness, using a structured hierarchy that builds gradually from less to more challenging situations. You remain in control of the process every step of the way. When appropriate, your therapist may also work with partners, family members, or other support people to ensure they can serve as effective coaches in your treatment rather than unintentionally reinforcing compulsive patterns.
How Will I Know if ERP is Right for Me?
This approach can be effective for a range of concerns, including OCD, specific phobias, panic disorder, and other anxiety-related conditions.
