Supporting Clients Beyond Therapy: Curating Community Resources in Michigan

At Being Human Group, we believe that healing does not begin or end in the therapy room. Mental health care is shaped not only by individual experiences but also by the communities, systems, and supports that surround us. Therapy is meaningful, yet it is just one part of a much larger network of care. When external systems are strong, they add a positive layer to healing. When they are scattered and difficult to navigate, challenges can feel heavier and isolating.

This is why our work as Michigan therapists extends beyond weekly sessions. We keep a macro-level perspective in our toolkit by considering the structural, environmental, and community factors that impact well-being.

Therapists in Michigan ask questions like:

  •  What supports already exist around the client?
  •  What could make daily life more manageable?
  •  How do community conditions impact their ability to heal?
  •  Where are the gaps, and what can we do to bridge them?

Why Community Resources Matter

A person’s wellness is influenced by housing stability, food security, social connection, family support, school environments, physical health, and access to affirming providers. Even the most motivated client can struggle if these foundational pieces are not in place.

For example:

  • A parent may need a local support group to prevent burnout.
  • A teen might feel isolated until they join a neurodiversity-affirming social group.
  • An adult exploring gender identity may need affirming medical providers or community spaces.
  • Someone managing ADHD may benefit from an executive-functioning skills group or movement class.
  • A person facing anxiety may find relief in mindfulness workshops or nature-based wellness programs.

Community resources provide structure, education, and belonging, which is support that therapy alone cannot always offer. For many clients, these resources become vital to their healing journey.

Behind the Scenes: What Happens After and Between Therapy Appointments

Clients rarely see how much time our interns and clinicians spend curating and updating resources. The mental health world is constantly evolving: programs open and close, waitlists change, insurance coverage fluctuates, and community needs shift.

To ensure we are giving clients the most accurate information, we continually explore:

  • Psychiatry openings and medication management clinics
  • Neurodiversity-affirming programs (social groups, sensory-friendly activities, OT options)
  • LGBTQ+ affirming healthcare and support spaces
  • Low-cost or sliding-fee therapy and counseling services
  • Movement, mindfulness, and somatic programs
  • Youth groups, mentorship programs, and after-school supports
  • Parenting classes, family workshops, and caregiver groups
  • Basic needs assistance (housing, food, employment, transportation)
  • And more!

Decreasing Barriers and Increasing Access to Therapy in Michigan

Many clients face obstacles unrelated to motivation or willingness to heal. Structural issues such as limited insurance coverage, long waitlists, transportation challenges, financial strain, and a lack of culturally responsive providers can prevent people from accessing the support they deserve.

By continuously updating our resource network, we aim to reduce these obstacles. Our goal is for clients to feel empowered rather than overwhelmed, supported rather than stuck, and informed rather than left to endlessly search for answers.

A Connected Community Helps Us Thrive

At Being Human Group, we are committed to community collaboration. We believe that healthy communities support healthy individuals, and individuals in turn strengthen their communities. This reciprocal relationship is the core principle of macro-level practice!

Whether it is recommending a sensory-friendly recreation program, identifying a low-cost psychiatry clinic, sharing a caregiver support group, or connecting someone with a trauma-informed movement class, our work is guided by the belief that healing is collective. No one should have to navigate complex systems alone!

Therapy is a great starting point, but we must acknowledge that healing is sustained by connection. We are dedicated to helping our clients find those connections every step of the way.
