Mental Health Myths that Keep People from Getting Help
Mar 11, 2026
Misinformation about mental health can spread quickly! Many people delay or completely avoid seeking support because they believe things that simply are not true. At our Plymouth, Michigan based therapy practice, we believe education is empowering. We will be looking at some of the most common mental health myths and replacing them with facts that foster understanding and healing.
MYTH #1: “Therapy is only for people with serious mental illness.”
You do not need a diagnosis to benefit from therapy. It can be beneficial for anyone. Although therapy is effective at addressing conditions like anxiety and depression, therapy can be a helpful tool for life’s daily stressors. Many seek counseling for stress, relationship challenges, life transitions, career concerns, parenting support, grief, and personal development. Therapy is a space for self-reflection, skill building and emotional wellness, not just crisis management.
MYTH #2: “If I just try harder, I should be able to fix this myself.”
Mental health challenges aren’t a matter of willpower. Conditions like depression and anxiety involve biological, psychological, and environmental factors. These conditions impact brain chemistry, nervous system responses and thought patterns. Therapy provides tools, insight, and evidence-based strategies to help you work with your mind and not against it!
MYTH #3: “Talking about my problems will make them worse.”
It is understandable to worry that discussing painful experiences will intensify emotions. Suppressing and avoiding feelings tends to increase anxiety and stress over time. In a safe, structured therapeutic environment, processing emotions helps reduce their intensity and builds resilience. Therapy moves at a pace that feels right for you, so you do not have to relive everything at once.
MYTH #4: “Strong people do not need therapy.”
Seeking help is a sign of strength, not weakness. Courage is about being willing to examine what’s not working and take steps toward change. When we push painful feelings aside, we may unintentionally delay getting the support needed to address underlying mental health concerns. Strength is about knowing when support is needed.
MYTH #5: “Medication is the only real treatment for mental health issues.”
Treatment is very individualized. Medication may be extremely helpful for some and for others therapy alone is more impactful. However, medication is not magic and often has the most benefit when used in conjunction with therapy, lifestyle changes or mindfulness practices. A qualified mental health professional can help you explore options that align with your needs and preferences.
MYTH #6: “If I start therapy, I will be in it forever.”
Therapy can be short term or long term. Some enter therapy for a specific goal over a few months, while others prefer ongoing support for personal growth. Length of therapy depends on your goals, needs and preferences. Progress is regularly reviewed collaboratively with you and your therapist.
Busting Mental Health Myths Matters!
Mental health stigma keeps people silent and gives them incorrect perceptions of what therapy is all about. Mental health is health! When we challenge myths, we create a space for honest conversations and earlier interventions to take place.
