Safe and Sound Protocol (SSP) for Effective Trauma Therapy in Michigan
Jan 14, 2026
Have you ever noticed how difficult it is to relax, focus, or connect with others when you do not feel safe? This is not something that you are doing wrong. Instead, it is your nervous system doing its best to protect you.
Before real healing and growth can come, our bodies need to first feel safe and regulated. This is where understanding the nervous system and tools like Safe and Sound Protocol (SSP) can be helpful.
Feeling Safe Matters
Safety is not just a thought in your mind. It is an experience you feel in your body. When your nervous system senses a feeling of safety, your body can:
- Relax
- Breathe deeply
- Think clearly
- Feel more connected to others
- Be more open to healing
On the other hand, when your nervous system senses danger, your body may shift into:
- Fight (irritability, anger)
- Flight (anxiety, restlessness)
- Freeze (numbness, shutdown)
- Alertness
- Exhaustion
Many people live in these states, most without even realizing it. Those who have experienced stress, trauma, chronic anxiety, sensory sensitives, or ongoing life pressures may be experiencing a felt sense of danger.
Understanding the Nervous System
Think of your nervous system as a smoke alarm. When it works properly, it alerts you to real danger and quiets when you are safe. If it has been through a lot, it may become sensitive, going off when there is no fire. The goal of therapy and Safe and Sound Protocol is not to turn off the alarm, but to reset the alarm so it can better recognize when you are safe.
Safe and Sound Protocol (SSP)
The Safe and Sound Protocol is a listening based intervention that uses specially filtered music to gently stimulate the nervous system through the auditory system. This pathway is connected to feelings of safety, emotional regulation, social connection, and calm states.
During SSP you do not need to talk, analyze, or revisit difficult experiences. You simply listen to the music, often being supported by a trained provider.
Ways SSP Can Help
Safe and Sound Protocol supports the Nervous System’s ability to recognize safety again, and may help with:
- Anxiety and chronic stress
- Feeling easily overwhelmed
- Emotional shutdown or numbness
- Ability to connect and communicate with others
- Sensory sensitivities
- Trauma related symptoms
Often, clients notice changes both emotionally and physically- reporting feeling more grounded, calm, present and connected after completing SSP.
