Boundaries

Boundaries are essential for any healthy relationship. They give us the space to be ourselves while also respecting the needs and feelings of others. Additionally, boundaries are important as they help define our self-esteem and allow us to express our needs, values, and desires.  Boundaries allow us to love others and ourselves safely-at the same time.

Mindfulness

No matter what you are struggling with, mindfulness can help. We often rush around and don’t fully experience our lives.  We get too busy, too stressed, or struggle because of things that have happened to us in the past to check in with ourselves, our bodies.  Mindfulness can be as simple as checking in with all five senses while brushing your teeth every day. Notice your feet on the floor, the taste of the toothpaste, the sound the water makes, your reflection in the mirror, any smell you notice.  Pause for just two minutes while brushing and check in.

Seasonal Affective Disorder

Did you know that changes in weather can affect your mental health? Seasonal
affective disorder (SAD) can occur during any season, but most commonly occurs in
late fall. While the specific cause of SAD is unknown, it’s generally believed that
abnormal levels of melatonin and serotonin production play a role in the
development of SAD. As the seasons change, the production of these hormones in
our bodies shifts. People with SAD have been found to have too much melatonin in
their bodies, which can increase sleepiness. They have also been found to have low
levels of serotonin in their bodies. One common way to increase the production of
serotonin in your body is through exposure to sunlight. The reduced level of
sunlight in the fall and winter is believed to contribute to the development of SAD. In
Michigan, people usually start to feel symptoms associated with SAD around
October or early November. As we enter a period with less sunlight, think about
whether any of these symptoms apply to you.

It’s a great day to continue your anti-racism journey, and Being Human Group has some resources for you to consider. As always, make sure you are following black authors and artists, and taking time to learn on your own. Remember to delete the phrase: “Can I just pick your brain for a minute” from your vocabulary as were are not asking folks to teach us for free-we need to be compensating people for their time and expertise, and there are many free resources available to you! This is by no means to complete list, just a few things or people our group found helpful!

Insomnia and Brain Health

At the end of a long and tiresome day, we come to bed like its devoted friend. We sleep blissfully, straight through the night. And when we wake up, we feel refreshed and energized, ready to take on whatever the new day brings.
